About the plant

Chuan mu tong is an evergreen clematis, unusual in a genus that is mostly deciduous, with leathery three-part leaves and masses of white almond-scented flowers in early spring; it is widely grown as a garden climber outside China. The stem is cut into thick discs while fresh, and a cut face shows radiating spokes of large vessels around a small pith. There is an important naming point — see the warnings.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Species verification matters with this herb. Material traded under the Mu Tong name has historically been adulterated with Aristolochia, which contains aristolochic acid and causes irreversible kidney damage and urinary-tract cancer. Buy only from a supplier who can identify the species. Fresh Clematis material also contains protoanemonin, a blistering irritant, which breaks down on drying. Not for use in pregnancy.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs.
